Why a UK Holiday? Holidaying in the United Kingdom may not sound like the ideal getaway for some people, but millions of us spend our free time exploring our own country every year. But with package holidays abroad and European city breaks being so cheap, why would we want to spend our hard earned money, and precious free time in our own part of the world? Well, there are lots of reasons actually! |
Sunset in Aberystwyth |

I find it quite worrying that many people I speak to have such poor knowlege of their own country and therefore have no desire to go and see any of it. One of the biggest reasons people discount holidays in the UK (apart from the weather) is through a lack of knowlege of the wonders the UK has to offer. How many of you reading this has been to Chesil Beach, climbed Snowden, visited Giants Causeway, or watched a sunset from the top of Constitution Hill in Aberystwyth? I'd bet good money that plenty of you haven't. Short Breaks I'm not trying to get people to give up going abroad for their holidays (I haven't) but I do want to encourage people to get out and about a bit more and see their own country. Short breaks are the ideal way to do this. Why not go away for a long weekend, or even just 2 nights and visit somewhere in the UK - wherever you live, I promise they'll be some fantastic trips within an hours drive. |

Cheddar Gorge, Somerset |
As a child, I remember many day trips to places such as Cheddar Gorge (left), Stratford-upon-Avon and the Wye Valley. We'd pile in the Austin Princess, moan in the back for an hour or 2 and then spend a great family day out somewhere new and interesting. My partner, who used to holiday abroad as a child, never really did this and consequently she has very little knowlege of UK geography. I've spent the last few years trying to convince her our country isn't all that bad! In recent years we've experience the delights of the Lake District, Salisbury, Stonehenge and the Wiltshire downs, Edale in the Peak District and the Menai Strait in Anglesey amongst many others. Why not educate your children in the wonders of the UK while also having a great holiday. |

The Weather Okay, so the UK weather is not the greatest but if you want a sunny summer holiday then go abroad by all means. However, if you want an activity filled fun holiday for the family then consider a UK holiday. In summer it is rare to get a full week of rain - granted you'll be lucky to escape rain entirely, but the weather isn't all that bad. It also depends on what type of holiday you want to go on. Why not try a canoeing holiday, or a sporting holiday at a dedicated holiday park? Holidays aren't just limited to lying on a beach you know! |
